I was offered an amazing opportunity to attend the sold out Karen Pryor Clicker Expo in Portland, Oregon and will be away until January 30th.

Services will continue as scheduled. Jenna will be doing morning and afternoon doggie walks and Espen will take care of things on the homefront.

Freedom No-Pull harnesses are the "Cadillac" of dog harnesses. Use them as a walking harness or as a No-pull training harness. There are other types of harnesses out there but I truly find these so exceptional that this is the only retail product that I sell.

Maren is certified by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers www.ccpdt.org which is recognized internationally for the testing and certification of dog trainers. It means Maren holds the designation of Certified Pet Dog Trainer - Knowledge assessed (CPDT-KA).

The CPDT-KA is the most recognized and respected dog training certification worldwide. It denotes a dog trainer who has demonstrated excellence in the field of dog training and has shown this by:
1. working in the field for a minimum of 300 hours;
2. providing references from a veterinarian, colleague, and client; and
3. passing a comprehensive examination that tests the trainer’s knowledge of the science of dog training; core areas that are assessed in the exam are instruction skills, animal husbandry, ethology (behaviour), learning theory, equipment, business practices and ethics.

The CCPDT is the only independent certification for professional pet dog trainers. As such, the certification is neither tied to membership in any organization nor tied to graduation from a specific school. The certification is administered by independent proctors only after the applicant meets all the published criteria to sit for the examination. Competence and continued professional growth is promoted through the recertification of qualified professionals. This independence distinguishes the CPDT-KA certification from other dog trainer certificates and dog trainer certification programs.

When you hire a CPDT-KA you can trust that they not only have the experience of training, but have sound knowledge that is well rounded, based on the science of canines, and is kept up to date on the most humane and effective methods.

Paw In Hand is excited to announce … Jenna MacBain has joined the Paw In Hand team!

Jenna brings with her a lifelong love of dogs... and of course a love of the outdoors ... and sharing them together. She has taken some training courses with her own dog "Juno" and is Canine First Aid certified. To find out more Jenna has written a note, see below.

Last week and this week Jenna is joining me on the daily field trip rounds and I’m really pleased with how well she interacts and manages the dogs. If we don't see you and your doggie in passing and you would like to meet Jenna, contact me and we will be happy to arrange a time to do this.

Hello my fellow animal lovers!

I’m thrilled that Maren has welcomed me to the Paw in Hand team as a dog walker! I’ve met some of your furry family members already and am looking forward to getting to know them all soon.

Dogs have always been a huge part of my life and it’s great to have work that allows me to be with them. Along with my certificate in K9 First aid, I have a background in fitness and holistic nutrition. I joined the Squamish community about one year ago, and my furry baby - a shy husky Sheppard named Juno - is a Mamma’s boy through and through. We've taken some training courses together and continue to learn about positive reinforcement relationship based training.

I’m so happy to be able to help your canine friend explore the beauty of this area with other dogs, and while helping me continue to learn the absolute best ways to keep everybody having a good time on the trails.

Catching the BREEZE!!!

This is a video of Opal, my 4 year old Wirehaired Hungarian Vizsla. I captured video footage the first time I put this safety fan on the coffee table. She loves to bite at the water stream from a garden hose and I wonder if she felt similar sensations doing this.

When I play garden hose games with her I use turn the water on and off and use the game as a reward. eg: I ask Opal to "down" and as a reward she gets to catch the water stream. Hmmmm.... wonder how I could use this as another training opportunity...?

Please know that there are many "funny" dog videos that I find offensive because the dogs show obvious signs of stress. I believe this was safe and stress free for Opal and hope you feel this to be true as well.

Introducing Katherine Mutzke!

Katherine and Maren met 5 years ago and instantly recognized that they shared the same philosophy of relationship based dog training. Since then they have attended training workshops and seminars together.
They often get together to play, train and hike with their own dogs. In 2010 Maren and Katherine started teaching dog training classes -- so -- time is overdue for a formal introduction!

This year we are offering Puppy's First Steps Classes as well as continuing with our STEP ONE classes. NEXT STEP classes starting later in the spring will further you and your dogs learning by targeting specific issues such as Trailettiquette, leash walking and more.

Inaugural Small Dog Field Trip!

Paw In Hand is now offering Small Dog Field Trips. All the goodness of our popular group dog walks but with a "small" difference! Small dogs need exercise, a chance to be out in nature and interact with other dog buddies too. Maren's dog Trixie is a small 10 pound Chihuahua/Yorki? cross and has taught her a lot about small dogs' needs. Occasionally a relaxed, friendly larger dog will be incorporated into the group to to help small dogs desensitize to larger dogs. As with all our interactions with dogs we carefully monitor their social body language signals which show their emotional state and help ensure everyone is comfortable.

We always consider your dogs’ safety in all our interactions and though there are inherent risks to off leash dog group activity they are minimized by careful observation, interception, behaviour modification and training. We reinforce desirable behaviours using praise, rewards and play. Long lines and bells are available for dogs not quite ready for full off leash freedom.

Attention - Last week I asked you to watch your dog out of the corner of your eye as often as possible and when they glance at you and to say "yes" or "good" and follow it with some rewarding treat, toy, praise, game, or activity. Owners said that their dogs were more tuned into them already! Leave It Foundation Exercise - (Closed fist "zen") We used the Reward Marker RM when the dog backed off and stayed away from the treat hand. The reward came from a different hand. A couple of the puppies advanced to eye contact before being rewarded. We also tried "under the foot" zen with a couple of the pups. Great progressions. Dogs NAME - That's my name ... don't wear it out! Reminder of the difference between training and testing again. In a learning situation if you think there is a pretty good chance of your dog responding then say their name and the instant they turn their head say "yes" and then reward that head flick with something really great! Treats, toy, game, or all of the above. In a "test" situation then try to prevent from repeating your dog's name multiple times. Hand Target - This simple exercise is actually a key to many more training games. Use high value rewards and lots of enthusiasm for this game in the beginning stages so that it's value can transfer to other exercises and eventually become rewarding in itself! Remember when you were a kid and you heard or read the words "You Won" it really meant something special to you and you looked forward to your prize with great anticipation? I bet now you are skeptical when you hear these same words and hardly pay any attention to them...

In dog training we use a "Reward Marker". We want our dog to eagerly anticipate hearing it and getting the coveted prize! In order to keep it meaningful to the dog we have to ensure it stays "charged" and ensure that it is followed every time with powerful rewards that your particular dog finds reinforcing in that situation. It is usually used in the learning stages of a new behaviour.

In the later stages of training we use praise, petting, happy body language and intermittent rewards to reinforce behaviours that your dog already responds to. (I hesitate to say "know" as that is a whole different blog post!)

Identification ID!!!

Over the past week I have had 3 -- yes, three -- phone calls from people who found a dog wandering or lost and called the phone number on the back of the little green Paw In Hand Pet Services tag. In all cases the dog was not far from home or nearby with it's owner and quickly reunited. If you and your doggie are a client of mine I will do my best to retrieve your dog if found and take care of it in the meantime until you can be contacted.

Check your dogs' collar and tags daily. Tags do fall off occasionally ... some dogs are rougher on their tags than others ... right Sophie? ;0)

Please ensure that your pet has a snug fitting collar and that tags are current with at least two different phone numbers. Local Pet Supply Stores can make identification tags on the spot! For travelling you can also get temporary pouches and tubes for alternative contact information.

Having the rabies tag and the municipal dog licence tag on your dog is also important. In case of emergency all the information is available.

Microchips and Tatoos are options that you may want to consider but they are secondary to the first place people look when they find a loose dog ... the bright green Paw In Hand tag!!! My doggie buddies!

Trick'n Treat Training!

- Doorbell ringing means automatic "go to place"
- Opportunity to accept rushed handling and having costumes adjusted
- Default "Stay" while I open the door...
- "Wait" even with goulish distractions!
- Attention to me gets a treat
- Then a chance to say hi to the trick-or-treaters!
- A chance to check out the candy with their nose is cued by "sniff-sniff"

I am very lucky that my dogs aren't upset by fireworks but I also didn't want to chance it and take them out on the streets on Halloween evening. We had fun at home!

You won't need it anymore!

Our training methods don't use leash and collar corrections so no need for special "training" collars.

We teach voluntary and default behaviours in our training classes. We put the onus on our dogs to learn what behaviours are needed in certain situations. No need for commands or corrections because the dog learns that there is value in doing what we have taught them.

I don't know whether Daisy has ever played the hand target game before or not but she is an enthusiastic learner!

I played around with her for a bit -- tempting her to touch my open hand and the moment her nose touched my hand I marked it with a crisp clear "Yes" and immediately placed a treat in the same target hand that she had just touched. A few repetitions and high value rewards made the game very reinforcing! Movement and happy praise and interaction came along with the package.

Daisy quickly caught on and followed my hand to the left side or right side of my body, in walking position and coming towards me. These positions could eventually have a verbal cue applied such as "side" or "close" for when encountering other users on trails or "heel" or "front". When walking on leash a hand target could also be used in distracting situations to help the dog focus on you. Using a hand target also helps your dog comes close to your body when called.

The hand target itself becomes a reward for many dogs just for the chance to play such a fun game with you.

Sniff sniff is a "command" you should teach your dog!

I wrote another post a while ago praising the merits of a dog that will "sniff" on cue.
Sniffing is rewarding for most dogs so it can be a command and a reward. If your dog is sniffing then he isn't _________ (fill in the blank ie: gobbling down pooh, running away, barking, etc.)
If you led him to the good smelling spot then you are a good leader in his eyes.
You can be the leader that tells when to sniff and when to pay attention to you ... when to walk nicely on leash and when to take a sniff break ... when to ....
You get the idea!

I was recently helping a family with their dog "Roxie", a Yorkie cross that barks intolerably at the doorbell.

Mat training instead of "no begging"

What is the big deal about expecting dogs not to beg? When I walk past a chocolate store I peek in the windows and my salivary glands are triggered and my senses are stimulated and my eyes get round ... why should a dog not have similar reactions to foods that tempt him?
Is it that they shouldn't look? Is it that they shouldn't act upon their impulses to take the food from our plate? Am I allowed to look in the store window? Am I allowed to look and see how much change I have in my purse? To buy? To eat? Chocolate!!!

Why do we expect dogs to have standards higher than those that we set for ourselves?

I consider begging to be a good opportunity to teaching a long reliable down stay behaviour!

Artistic, creative and fun for both the humans and the dogs! No suppressed dogs. No intimidation training. If dogs can be trained to perform behaviours like this through positive reinforcement methods then surely we can come up with intelligent ways of teaching them appropriate household manners without using excuses such as "dominance" and "alpha"... Afterall, it's really all just tricks to them!

Just like the treadmill video for the song “Here It Goes Again”, the video is extremely artistic and very entertaining. However, the best part for me is that it features dogs doing many different behaviors of varying levels of difficultly (but none too challenging on their own) very well, simultaneously in real time. The whole routine was filmed in one piece with no editing. While the routine is very impressive, the dogs are allowed to be dogs and to show their enthusiasm for the work.

It’s clear the dogs are having fun, enjoying working, and are comfortable being dogs, letting their own individual personalities shine through. There is nothing robotic or oppressive in their nature. In other words it’s clear to me the dogs were highly motivated and probably play/trained for the video.

This brief interview with the trainer Lauren Henry of Talented Animals confirmed my suspicions, “"We spent a lot of time playing with them … Each behavior is part of a whole game they’re playing,” she explains. “For instance: the dogs running around people’s legs at the beginning. Riot, the little dog on the left, I would have her go around the chair and then I’d throw the ball. Then I would have her go her around the chair twice, and then throw the ball. And then three times, and then add the person.”

The other great things the dogs’ performance in this video illustrates is that perfection is not necessary for an impressive presentation and that training can be fun at both ends of the leash. Very cool OK Go, very cool indeed.

The scientific principles of positive reinforcement at work ... work that looks like fun though eh!!!?!!!

When dogs are trained through this method they actually want to do what we ask of them because of trust, communication and their relationship with us; their benevolent leader!

Dogs can learn to control their impulses if they are taught that is how they get access to the good things in life.

We promote using management to prevent "mis-behaviour" and then teach "correct" behaviour. Sometimes even getting a chance to misbehave for a moment can be reinforcing to a dog no matter the outcome. Polite social skills with people and dogs are taught in this way.

The behaviours or “cues” that we teach to our dogs are used as a "key" to things in life that they want. This is called the Premack principle and it is the basis for many of the exercises that we teach.

In this way "Obedience commands" can be achieved without any use of force or intimidation. In fact by using reinforcement correctly a behaviour can actually become stronger over time and more reliable in different situations. Over time you need to use “rewards” less and less often because that is how you strengthen the behaviour! Teaching off leash skills is not difficult because it wasn't used as a training tool in the first place.

With control and intimidation methods it is often the force that has to get stronger in order to maintain the desirable behaviour and it has to be repeated in different scenarios. The dogs' desire to "misbehave" hasn't been changed. It is only being temporarily suppressed ... until that time when they know you can’t make them do it or when they want something that they think is better than you have to offer or that time ....

We promote positive reinforcement training because we know it works and have seen it work over and over and over again ... with many different breeds and types and ages of dogs. Sadly I have also seen force and intimidation methods used on dogs and though in some cases it appeared to work to punish the problem behaviour it actually only suppresses it temporarily ... and along with it also suppresses the life in the dogs eyes. Aversive methods also increase anxiety, reactivity and aggression in dogs. What happens when a child or another person is unable to physically dominate a dog? Why can Walruses be trained?

If given the choice wouldn’t you or any other individual rather be with a trainer that uses positive reinforcement than one that uses coercive techniques? Using positive techniques makes the trainer feel better too. Win-win situation all round don't you think!?!

WUFF WUFF! Gather Around! A Helicopter!

Time for some Anthropomorphizing !

We were out for a wonderful walkies today. Maren calls them "field trips". Dogs appreciate beautiful autumn days too! We were full of zoom! We were happy to run and play and explore the forest trails. Maren always seems to get her camera out on days like this so we stayed nice and close so we could have a chance of getting our picture taken!

Whenever Maren stops along the trail we know there is a pretty good chance of something good happening. Positive reinforcement works wonders! Kinda like gambling ... if there is even a slight chance of getting a jackpot (the good treats from the left pocket this time?!?) then it is worthwhile to keep trying it out. Lots more stories about that ... but back to today...

So Maren seems to always have us in the corner of her eye at all times. Whenever one of us checks in and looks at her she acknowledges us and then VOILA she says "Yes" and we get some kind of reinforcement ... sometimes a treat, sometimes praise, sometimes a scritchy scratchy, maybe a stick or a chance to run alongside her or play hide and seek in the brush or ... ooops, getting carried away ... it's just good to check in with Maren 'cause she finds fun and interesting and tasty things when we do that!

Our names are also important and worthwhile responding to! Same thing ... never know what kind of fun or good stuff happens after we hear our name. After a while Rocky doesn't bother responding to the name Trixie, or Baxter doesn't both responding to the name Opal, but if thier name is spoken ... instant HEAD FLICK!

Sometimes Maren calls the whole group to come with a whistle. I think there is video of that on the blog too ... the whistle is the BEST! It is always followed by the extra high value reinforcements (fancy dog trainer language but reinforcers can be different depending on the individual ... can't imagine why not all dogs love sticks like me but hey, I guess not all dogs love being petted either ... their reward might just be sweet talkings ...) anyway ... got carried away again talking about rewards! Maren's dog Opal turned on a dime once when a deer bounded away right in front of her ... hard to imagine but the whistle had been sooooo well reinforced and the response was so visceral and automatic that when Maren blew the whistle Opal just spun around and came! We are in awe... but our whole group turned away from a bear about a month ago too so I suppose we're awesome too!

So back to today ...
Oh, actually one more thing ...

Us dogs that have been hanging around with Maren for a while know the Gather Around Routine well. She stops. We gather around. Polite is right! Don't sit too far away but pushiness doesn't pay off either. If some dog tries to push another dog out then the other dog gets a treat. If some schmuck tries to hoard the treats then he gets pushed outta the circle (simply stepping into another dogs space works wonders). Some dogs are worried about other dogs coming close but even they soon learn that there is no threat there ... if a dog comes close then the treat rate actually goes up. Cool! I learned that one! I actually like other dogs getting into my space now! And, the longer you stay sitting, the higher your chances of more coming your way. Don't have to yell at us to stay! We like that idea! Then the ultimate reward ... give eye attention to Maren and then she leads us on the next part of the adventure!!! Arf Wuff Arrrooooooooo!

Twice today we encountered a motorcyclist. I don't know who heard the loud vroooming noise first, Maren or us dogs, but the sound of a motorcycle has become emotionally conditioned to mean good things to us. Maren moves off to the side at a wide part of the trail (the start of the Gather Around Routine that I just told you about.) Some of the dogs that have been doing field trips for a while actually turn to look at Maren at the first sound of a motorcycle ... or bicycle for that matter ... no yelling and compulsion or aversive training techniques needed to stop a bike chases ... but that's for another blog entry ...

So today ... yes, back to today again ... Dogs are sometimes said to have a sixth sense but Maren swears she didn't consciously hear the helicopter coming ... she had the camera out and was videoing us playing the "Name Game" when suddenly it was almost overhead ... and LOUD!

We had played the "Gather Around" game with the motorcycle earlier in the walk so the routine was fresh in our memory. Noise + Maren stops = Gather around and have the extra good treats from the left pocket and happy praise and take turns and make eye contact and then be released to romp and adventure some more!

Moral of the story?
"Why check out or chase or worry about a motorcycle or helicopter or whatever the case may be ... when Maren leads us confidently aside and makes it worth our while!" We trust our leader and take our cues from her!

The front page of the Whistler Question on Thursday September 2, 2010 had a picture of a dog that was taking part in a recent WAG fundraiser. The dog was in a crowded room at the k9 Wine and Dine event along with other four and two legged guests in a hotel banquet room type setting. The dog was dressed in a shirt, seated on a chair at a table, and was being hugged by two children that were family members -- and then made to pose for the camera. The dog was obviously stressed as could be seen by his facial tension, ears held back, whites of eyes showing, tongue lip licking, mouth pulled back, avoidance and that was without seeing the rest of the body! How far would this dog go sending "help" signals before someone noticed and helped him out of an uncomfortable situation. Maybe his owners never considered that just one more stressor could put their usually easygoing dog over the edge. Was he really fine or was he only worried about the camera? Was it the last drop that overflowed the bucket or was it the many small drops before that? Would this dog bite? Maybe, maybe not.... How do you feel when you are stressed and then faced with more and more stressors? Have you ever "snapped"?

This video is well known amongst dog trainers. Watch it carefully. Did this dog "suddenly bite out of the blue"? Watch for early warning signs that the dog is uncomfortable. If we educate ourselves on recognizing the early warning signs of stress in our dogs and help them get out of situations we can prevent unnecessary risk and possible injury. You may be able to help teach your dog to find their way out of a situation but sometimes it is up to us to step in before things escalate. If your dog is growling you may have already missed some subtle cues. Don't punish the growl. Watch your dog closely and help them before they feel the need to growl.

Dragonflies, Dogs and Life...

The other day I was out hiking with a group of dogs. We were near a pond at the edge of the forest. I had a lot on my mind over the last few days trying to educate the owners of a new puppy as to why aversive methods of dog training were not only cruel and potentially harmful but not even effective in the long run. Over the last few months I had also been entwined with changes in my dog service business and career. Contemplations of mid life changes were mixed in there as well.

So, with compassion and change on the forefront of my mind I made a discovery that brought with it more than it may have at another time in my life. Ahead of me on the dusty trail I saw a large blue dragonfly ... motionless. My first thought was that it was dead and I would collect it for my nature display. When I picked it up however, I discovered that it was still alive and I felt an instant surge of compassion. Compassion for a dragonfly. Was it hurt and beyond recovery? Should I put it out of it’s suffering?

I held it in the palm of my hand and stared at it’s iridescent beauty, totally mesmerized. Watching dragonflies in flight, riding the breeze and hovering can easily put me in a contented trance but staring into the many faceted depths of the eyes of a living one is ... is ... well, I can honestly say that my life changed that day.

Dragonfly behaviourist I am not, however as I observed the dragonfly in my hand it was apparent that it had been injured in some way, quite possibly it’s neurological system. It’s legs sporadically twitched and a few times his wings readied for flight but with erratic ineffective movements. A couple of times it’s body made odd contortions. I took photos of it with my camera phone as I considered whether there was a chance that the dragonfly was temporarily stunned and may regain function or whether it was kindest to help it quickly to it’s death. It didn’t seem to get worse or better. I carried it for a while in my camera case.

Some time later I took it out and again held it in my hand and observed it. Similar body movements to before. Then it’s wings started to quiver and vibrate more and more rapidly until the amazing insect flew out of my hand! ... and sadly landed once again on the ground. I quickly scooped it up so no dog would harm it and I felt the time was right to end it’s life. No sooner had I decided when once again it flew off ... I’d like to say that it flew to freedom but in an instant as fast as I could have done it myself, a dog snatched him and quickly ended his life. I was stunned but ...

What does this experience have to do with dog training and behaviour? As I watched the dragonfly I thought of compassion and understanding and what is normal behaviour for a species.

My daughter and I hiked up the Chief today and were of course accompanied by our doggie hiking buddies Opal and Trixie. (I just realized I have to do a post to introduce them properly!) Quite a few people commented on how well behaved our dogs were. I thanked them but made a point of mentioning that we do continually work on it.

Dogs are allowed off leash on the Peak Trail. I want to help ensure that they always are.

Trail Etiquette is a subject that has always got me very emotional. I remember when I was a child, seeing an article in a magazine "A World Without Dogs". It showed a photo of an empty beach. It had a great impression on me. The article mentioned that not everyone loves dogs but if dog owners were responsible and kept their dogs under control and picked up their waste that then people could share public places harmoniously together. When people let their dogs off leash and allowed them to jump up on and greet people, run over their towels at the beach, barge into children and rudely ambush shy dogs regardless of the other dogs and owners signals then dog will be less and less welcome in public places. Obeying signs is of course respectful too. I brought water for my dogs so that when we got to the creek where a sign was posted "Please keep dogs out of water ... drinking source for campsite" they weren't tempted.

Today it was important that my dogs stayed close to me. It was important that they didn't bark at people and that they moved to the side or waited at crowded parts on the trail. We only met a few other dogs today. The owner of one had the dog by her side and under control and said something about it not being good with small dogs. I respected that and ensured I had Trixie under control. Her dog was also under control. Respect. The other two dogs we met were sociable and respectful and again under verbal control of their owner. The dogs all had appropriate dog greeting behaviour and went on their way. I saw no dog feces on the trail either!

There is room on the trails for us all if we take some common courtesies. Please don't take your dog off leash in public places if you don't have good verbal control. Please train your dog. (on our hike today we used attention, targeting, mat work, wait, shadow handling and lots and lots of Premack principle with distractions such as chipmunks) Please appreciate that not everyone or every dog for that matter wants to visit with your dog. Learn about dog body language and teach your dog to respect others' as well.

Adventures of Hero!

Hero arrived 48 hours ago. It's been very very busy! I was going to write about the first 24 hours but now 48 hours have gone by!

...sounds like the start of a post that I wrote on June 21st eh?!?

Hero joined the doggie field trip adventure with the Paw In Hand gang. His dog social skills are very good. He isn't bold but he isn't fearful, he reads and reacts well to the other dogs signals and is quick to show appeasement postures. He explored but checked back in with me (and was reinforced for that of course!) His energy and stamina was good for an moderate 1 1/2 hour trail walk.

Two thunder clap yesterday while we were out on the trail with the dog group. Hero did notice the first one -- stopped and hesitated. I reacted with some jolly routine time and had a treat and happy voice party. Positive association with new stimuli.

Swimming! I didn't ask his mommy if he had been swimming before. Today we took him to the off leash dog lake and he went right in and swan to fetch a lilly pad. Relaxed swimmer! Then lots of fetching of sticks and floating Kong toys!
Another stimuli which may have been new to him was a motorbike ahead at an intersection on the trail. It was far away enough that none of the dogs got particularly arroused to again, gather round for jolly routine and treat party. Association hopefully made: new stimuli equals check in with human leader and good things happen.

Hero could quickly learn to play "keep away" with toys I think. I can see it in his eyes and when his body just slightly slows and stiffens when he has a valued possession. Trading toys instead of taking them from him will be a game we will play lots.

Wow, does he gobble his food when it is in a food dish. The kibbles were gone so fast I hardly had time to look at his body language to see if he might show any concern about any people approaching is food bowl. Regardless, it is always a good idea to do resourse guarding prevention exercises with a puppy and for that matter, with any dog throughout their lives. People coming near your food bowl are actually good news! Surprise goodies coming ... not to take your dish away silly puppy.

He may be eating most of his meals divided into training rewards, and find-it games or in busy-toys anyhow...

Crate Games. Hero only used a crate for a short while when he was a puppy. I plan to reintroduce him to it as he already resisted slightly to going into it. I didn't push him much ... a gentle nudge just to see ... then we played a few in and out games and fed him dinner in there. More crate games tomorrow. Tonight he is tethered beside my bed on his mat.

Ah yes, mat games! His owner wants him to learn appropriate dinner table manners. Is it still called begging if a dog is laying down on his mat while you are eating? Two feet away? Ten feet away? More on this later too!

Housetraining ... all good!

Two resident cats. Hero must have met a feline somewhere before and learned a prickly lesson ... he gave them a wide berth the first time he saw them!

Vehicles are good places to curl up in and settle. They take you to good places and they are good to sleep in after a fun outing too. Chewy stick instead of seat belts is not a bad idea though just in case.

Chewing ... needs to be re-directed occasionally but age appropriate and especially for a Golden Retriever which is an orally motivated breed.

Nipping and biting is a concern for his owner but I've only seen it once or twice so far. Hero quickly learned my body language -- when Maren stops and stands still with her hands in neutral position then sit in front of her and wait for further guidance. Yup! Sometimes treats, sometimes, petting loving, and sometimes a chance to play toy time!

Here we go again! Didn't I learn from last time? Taking a puppy into our household is soooooo much work ... what was I thinking (again)!?!?

Okay ... this time it is my sister-in-law's puppy so I kinda had to say yes. But, I am such a sucker for watching dogs learn -- especially puppies! Little cuddly sponges!

Hero is a Golden Retriever. He is now almost 18 weeks ... 4 1/2 months old. He came from a responsible breeder. His mommy got him at 8 weeks of age. She has been following the advice from the book "After You Get Your Puppy" by Dr. Ian Dunbar. And yes, we have spoken on the phone a few times for late night support sessions!

I met Hero briefly when he was 8 weeks old. First impressions were good.

My impression in the first hours getting to know him is that he is a fairly mellow puppy. He had just been traveling and visiting for a few days before arriving at our home so he may also be somewhat tired and overwhelmed as well.

Field Trips out with the Paw In Hand doggie group are never dull!

There was a nice brown black bear waaaay across the other side of the logging clear cut ... too far for the doggies to make the effort to investigate but close enough for them to notice! My own dog Opal has played the "Look At That" training game with other distractions before but this was the first time with a bear! All these "mock" scenarios in training were a good learning tool because in real life experiences we usually have less control over the situation. A couple of the other dogs in the group that day played a good preliminary round at the LAT game. Notice a few Auto Check In eye contacts and some Name Game as well.

Good example of how trained foundation behaviours can be used in real life situations. If we encounter a bear again then they have a history of reinforcement of checking back in with me and hopefully will choose that option automatically because of all the training we've done rather than act impulsively...

Mat Games in real life

Katherine and I took our doggies Keegan, Opal and Trixie for a swim down at the boat launch this afternoon for some fetchin' and splashin' fun!

Then we headed for the downtown park to dry off in the sun on our blankets. Putting our Mat Training Games into real life situations. The doggies noticed people and dogs go past in the distance and were calm on their mats. We got some work done! Those mat training games paid off.

But then ... an irresponsible dog owner passed by on his bicycle with his dog off leash, crashed our party and stole one of our dog's chewies. Whether the dogs was friendly or not was not the issue ... whatever breed it was wasn't the issue ... (well maybe not a major one) but the dog came up uninvited to a picnic and didn't respond quickly to the owners cues to come or to drop the chewie. Grrrr... Luckily I have benefited from anger control methods and meditation ... and our dogs have benefited from practicing the "Car Crash" or "Dog in Yer Face" games ... We do a lot of exerices from Leslie McDevitt's excellent book "Control Unleashed"

Yippee Yahoo ... Dried horse POOH

Katherine and I were so excited today to find some dried up horse pooh! Not toooo fresh to be overly tempting (to the dogs) -- but not so old that there was no good smell left to it either!

Why would we be so excited to find dried up equine dung? It was a great training opportunity! That's why! A chance to train our dogs to focus on something and to reinforce the "SNIFF" cue!

If a dog is sniffing then they aren't ________ (fill in the blank: eating, running away, rolling in it, etc.)

The chance to sniff something wonderful can also be used as a life reward. Wuffie come! Good come -- sniff this! Yay! If you are the finder of the good sniff substance then your dog will think they better keep a closer eye on you on the trails 'cause you are the finder of amazing discoveries. Share the experience! (well, okay -- maybe just the excitement of the experience)

Normal dog/dog greeting behaviour is usually initiated by the dogs sniffing each other. For some dogs that need help learning appropriate social skills with other dogs, reiforcing a sniff cue can help the process.

SHADOW handling to the rescue!

Shadow handling comes from the agility world but works wonders for us too!

When it comes to off or on leash "HEELING" a few of my mentors are; Silvia Ttrkman, Susan Garrett and even Greg Darrett...I ABSOLUTELY can not tell you HOW much FUN it is for the dog and human to play shadow handling games. BONUS is you end up with a rock solid velcro dog, who LOVES to be close JUST because it's FUN and really rewarding!

Come to think of it, for those who never can find time to carve out for exercise...it's a great way to exercise! Race around, burn calories and SPEND TIME building a bond with your dog. I have yet to meet a dog that doesn't LOVE this game! You'd be surprised that even the aloof ones get in on the fun.

You don't need to be goofy all the time, just sneak it in on your walks from time to time and they'll walk politely while keep their one eye on you for the slightest indication that you'll start the fun. Works with the Premack principle as well...walk politely without tension on the leash and...we'll play a few shadow handling games on our walk!

You can sneak this "training' in any time...ANYWHERE...and if you time it right...you can use the environment as a "THANKS" for sticking to me like crazy glue :)

I'll update the steps and take video with my guys sometime this week, but for now...here's a perfecto example from Sylvia Trkman's new puppy vid!

1- following you in the water (how much fun is that on a hot day!)
2- coming to you means cuddles or jumping up into your arms!
3- coming to you means we get to play games and learn tricks w/treats!
4-coming to you means to down in front of you then scoot in beside you
5-start your heeling exercises, rewarding them for backing up, beside you, circles through your legs, tugging playing with their favourite toy as a 'thanks" for sticking so close
6-more tricks! Sneak on your belly, go to your mat
7- play with me! race with me! Then race with other dogs then come back for more fun with me!

All this builds VALUE (Susan Garrett term) for paying attention to you and provides you with the opportunity to be "in tune" with eachother. The end result is there can be other dogs, people, noise, action going on in the distance but FOCUS for you is much more FUN.

SAY goodbye to those problem behaviours of chasing, barking, lunging...the environment becomes white noise...and YOU the APPLE of their eyes. In the end, they don't want to miss out on the fun with you. It gives dogs who worry about other dogs, people, leaves falling, cars, bikes a job to do. Leslie McDevitt also covers this in her work as well!

There are body language cues that help the dog figure out which side to stick close to, how to move around into different positions which keep things interesting for the dog.

I've been doing "shadow handling " for years without knowing that there is a method to it which kicks things up a notch and makes it even more fun for the dog after attending a Susan Garrett Foundation Skills workshop.

I love this video, as you can see Susan's body cues clearly. You should see how amazing her dogs are on an agility course. In person they are a riot.

It's a way to keep your dog focused and learning...and provides mental stimulation! If you watch them play amongst themselves they often play this game as well!

Bonus is it's exhausting to concentrate on a task, we do it all the time. Ever feel tired after reading or when you're learning something new? You'll find it's an ideal way to burn off some steam and take the edge off, when your dog is looking for something to do and racing around is not an option.

Doggies out on a field trip!!!

Cute huh? Indy was adopted from the Vancouver Pound and joined her new family just over a month ago and now she has joined the Paw In Hand family too.

This blog post is not just about Indy though ... it is about any dog that you interact with. It could be any dog that I take out on a doggie field trip for the first time or any time afterward for that matter. It is about trail training and communication and relationship and understanding your dog and having fun together -- all the fun things in life together with YOU.

From the time I first met Indy at her front door I watched her body language and interacted with her according to her responses. I responded by using my body language, reinforcing behaviours that I like and trying to prevent or interrupt behaviours that were undesirable ... and mixing in a few simple foundation training games too!

- My greeting when meeting Indy and her handler on the porch was based on Indy's comfort level. Our body language makes a big difference when approaching dogs. Indy was happy to meet me.
- Putting the leash on Indy and handling her head and shoulder area was combined with happy voice and treats and her body language showed relaxed anticipation at every step.
- Collar grab test was paired with a tasty treat as a safety test as well as a foundation for recall games.
- Walking on leash towards the van: if she pulled I stopped and waited for her to check in with me then we moved forward again. Every step matters if you want your dog to be attentive to you and not learn leash pulling either.
- I ensured that she happily jumped into the van and had a comfortable space without being crowded by other dogs.
- She was close enough to my drivers seat that I could treat her if needed and calm her. She didn't need it though. She was my last pick-up before the walk so she didn't have to wait long before we got to the parking area.
- When we parked I calmly got together my backpack and gear as the dogs all waited patiently. Premack ... wait and be quiet and good things come ... then I got out of the van and walked around to the sliding door.
- Indy was the first to do the reorienting exercises, default wait and sit and that I do at all doorways and of course always out of the van ... No rushing off without the special key (ME!) first!
- We played a few attention and focusing games while the other dogs waited patiently in the van. Indy passed the tests. I then let another dog out of the van to see if Indy would still check in with me -- she passed that too -- and then the field trip began!

During our walks there are many things that I do to keep the dogs attentive to me. Mini training games such as auto attention, treat zen, name game, release cues, recall, stop motion cues, Premack trail rewards, and more! I watch their body language for early signs that could lead to trouble and redirect them to more appropriate outlets. Always easier to get dogs to DO something than to NOT DO something. At worst a dog may get a time out on leash.

Potential new doggie clients are pre-screened. Dogs with aggression, bike chasing, wildlife harassing, or other such issues are not candidate for group off leash field trips.

Of course dogs can always learn new things ... both desirable and not desirable so I try my best to set my doggie clients up for success so that they have many happy years adventuring with me. If owners can do their part in training their dogs some foundation behaviours it helps greatly in problem prevention.

Targeting -- just like YOGA?!

I don't remember where I heard this but it is a good correlation.

When your dog is doing target training he isn't reacting to the world around him ie: not barking at passing bicycles, etc. Target training is an excellent focusing exercise.

Dogs that are fearful or bark at things in their environment can benefit from incorporating target training into their daily activities.

Target training is also an element of many important obedience type behaviours such as come and heel.

Many of those fun tricks you see dogs do are taught by target training.

Having fun with your dog strengthens your relationship and helps training too!

When a training exercise is simple and fun the owner and dog are more likely to do it too!

According to wiki.answers.com Theodore Roosevelt originated this phrase as a description of his foreign policy when he was President of the United States. Roosevelt attributed the proverb to West Africa, but its origin isn't known.

Perhaps you remember this phrase ... "Speak Softly and Carry a Beagle"?

How about "Whisper and carry a big stick"?

Whispering is a popular buzz word in dog training. It is also used in the horse world. True, you don't have to raise your voice, but you don't have to carry a big stick as a means of force either. A big stick is great for playtime with a stick motivated dog though!

I have often been referred to as a "Dog Whisperer". This phrase can have different connotations. If it means that you don't have to shout at your dog then yes, you can call me a dog whisperer.

There is so much more involved than whispering when training your dog.

Often I don't use any verbalizations at all when interacting with my dogs. Dogs are less tuned in to vocal signals than other signs. They don't need to listen to the blah blah blah that comes out of our mouths to be "in tune" with us and follow our lures as we use our bodies to communicate (ie. handsignals)...hence......the whispering myth busted! really nothing has to be said when it comes down to it..

Berry Yummy Treats on the Trail!!!

Another opportunity to train your dog that you don't want to miss out on! No drilling obedience exercises and long work sessions ... learn how to use opportunities in daily life to train your dog.

I teach my dogs to check in with me whenever I stop on the trail. We practice this in day to day interactions. It is more a way of communicating and a game than a command. When they check in with me they are thanked or reinforced with some type of reward or game or interaction ... or in this case a chance to pick their own berries!

Through the simple fun training games that my dogs and I play together they learn to be more attentive to me. These games are useful tools to help problems such as bike chasing, rushing at other trails users, devouring yuck on the trails, etc.

Hot Dogs ... The Particleboard of Meat!

They make for a good quick enticing training treat mind you...

Cut the hot dogs in half lengthwise. Slice them thinly. Spread the slices out on a plate covered with paper towels. Cover with another paper towel and NUKE them until they get blistery and dried around some edges. Blot and squish with more paper towels. Store in a baggie or container in the fridge ... or you might get greasy pockets just like me :0)

Tricks to work on over the Summer Holidays!

Our family is off on our holiday for a week. Our doggies are coming along too. We are going to do some training at the beach just like the dogs in this video!!!

Heat Wave Warning! Please take time out to read...

When I had my group of doggies out on the field trip yesterday I was very conscious of the increased risk of heat stroke, especially so for a few of the dogs. One was a hunting breed that is "go go go go" running through the forest type of dog that doesn't know when to stop. A couple of sessions on leash were necessary to help regulate body temperature. Another large overweight dog and a thick coated dog had to be watched carefully too. Luckily these dogs were all ones that readily dipped their bellies into the cool creek!

I of course chose shaded trails yesterday, decreased my pace and ensured we kept doubling back to the fresh water holes. I carry a first aid kit in my back pack, emergency phone numbers and an extra water bottle too!

Dog Heatstroke - Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention

Dog Heat Stroke can strike in minutes on hot, humid days, and may prove fatal if it's not treated promptly.
The good news is that it's preventable and I've listed below the symptoms of heat stroke, how to treat and prevent it, and the dogs most likely to suffer from heatstroke.
 What is Heat Stroke?
Heat stroke occurs when your dog is no longer able to maintain his normal body temperature of approximately 101F and it rises to 105F and above.
At temperatures above 106F your dog's internal organs will start to breakdown, and if he's not cooled quickly enough, he will die. Even if you can bring his temperature down, he may well have suffered irreversible internal damage.
Dog's regulate their temperature primarily through panting - on hot, humid days they are unable to cool their bodies effectively, and as a result their body temperature rises rapidly.
If your dog's temperature exceeds 106F, you only have minutes to save his life.
Symptoms of Heat Stroke
If your dog has heat stroke he will progressively show these signs:
Excessive panting;
Pale gums, bright red tongue;
Disorientation and your dog doesn't respond to his name;
Increased heart rate;
Thick saliva;
Vomiting;
Breathing difficulties;
Collapse;
Coma;
Death
Treatment
Heat stroke often occurs because a dog is confined, either in a car, kennel or crate; the first thing to do is remove your dog from where he was confined.
Make sure your dog is out of the sun and has access to water but don't let him drink too much.
Cool him with cool/tepid water - either immerse him in a bath, gently hose him or apply cool towels to his body. Importantly do not leave wet towels on your dog and do not use very cold water - both prevent your dog form being able to cool himself.
Move your dog to an area where there is cool air circulating, such as an air conditioned room or stand him in front of a fan. The cool circulating air will help your dog to reduce his temperature.
Keep monitoring your dog's temperature with a rectal thermometer; once it returns to normal stop the cooling process.
Whilst you are cooling your dog down phone your local emergency dog clinic, explain the situation and perform any additional treatment they suggest before taking him to the clinic.
Even if you manage to reduce your dog's temperature at home, take him to your vet for a thorough checkup - internal damage to your dog's organs might have taken place even though he recovered from heat stroke.
Dogs Prone to Heatstroke
Young puppies and older dogs;
Overweight dogs;
Dogs with an existing illness or recovering from illness or surgery;
Dog breeds with short faces - Bulldogs, Shar pei, Boston Terriers, Pugs - have narrow respiratory systems that easily get overwhelmed in hot and humid conditions;
Double coated breeds such as Chow Chows; and
Dogs bred for cold climates such as Malamutes, Huskies and Newfoundlands.

Preventing Heat Stroke
Be aware that the outside temperature can be a lot warmer than that shown on your thermometer -on humid days the relative temperature is much higher;
Dogs really don't know when to stop - try and keep your dog's activity to a minimum particularly on hot and humid days;
Exercise your dog early in the morning and/or later in the evening when the temperature is cooler;
If possible keep your dog indoors during the heat of the day in a well ventilated or air conditioned room; and
If your dog is outside during the day, make sure there is plenty of shady areas for him to lie in and he has access to cold water. If he likes water, put a paddling pool of water for him in a shady part of the garden so he can lie in that to keep cool, otherwise periodically spray him with cool water.

Does your dog KNOW it?

What does "knowing" what something means mean anyhow?

Does your dog know to respond to a "command" (certain cue or set of cues)?

Do you know what that sign at the edge of the road with the numbers and the kph letters at the side of the road means?

You know that you should obey traffic laws but do you always abide by them? Sometimes you are distracted and may not have noticed the last sign you passed. You may be in a rush to get somewhere and "misbehave" because it is important to you at that moment. You may not really remember details such as what hours playground speed limits are in effect. Your speedometer may be out of adjustment or you may not have looked at it! Or you may simply choose to break some laws because (choose one) there are never police around anyhow, school is out today, everyone else is speeding, etc.... Even if there is a chance of "punishment" (speeding ticket) you are likely to risk it because it is important to you (getting to work faster and on time) and history has shown that most of the time it is worth continuing with your habits. You only slow down when you know there is a speed trap.

Your dog will continue to get on the couch because it is instantly comfortable and worth the risk ... he only gets off when you are around. What does he know? Different set of cues! Another dog may not find the couch so tempting because they are less motivated by soft and comfy ... not because they know they shouldn't be on there.

Does your dog know what "sit" means when you are holding a cookie? When you have no cookie? When you are standing in front of him? When you are sitting on a chair or lying down on the floor and asking for a sit? When he is in the middle of wrestling with a dog buddy? When he is lying down? When you are wearing your Halloween costume? When you have strong perfume on and are wearing odd high heeled shoes on that make you walk different than usual?

Humans consider themselves to be the intelligent species and yet we seem to expect our dogs to abide by standards stricter that those we set for ourselves! Interesting eh!?!

Whether a dog (or a human) responds to a cue (signal, command, painted line, etc) depends on many things. Cues are often a combination of verbal, visual and environmental signals. Your dog may know "sit" in the kitchen with you standing upright and holding the food bowl but to him it is a completely different cue than when you ask him to sit when he wants to greet your guests. Dogs don't generalize learning very well. If we want them to learn what "sit" means in different contexts we must train them.

Training. That's a whole book in itself but in brief ... repeatedly setting up situations in which your dog will perform a behaviour, reinforcing it and then rinse, lather and repeat. Then behind the ears. Then the backside. In the early stages of acquiring a behaviour use lots of reinforcements. Gradually move to intermittent reinforcements and then to a variable schedule of reinforcement. Always mix it up with praise, toys, games, and life rewards. Practice in different locations and situations until each behaviour is generalized. Slowly add duration and distraction and difficulty one at a time. Over time the dog will respond out of habit because is has proven to be beneficial in the past! It was worth gambling on. It has become a well trained behaviour and then we could say he knows it ... well, maybe in most situations anyhow.

So yes, you do have to put in some time if you want your dog to learn the things that you want him to learn.

And ponder this ... once you really do know something ... you can't "un-know" it. Like when you form a bad habit then it is very hard to change. So make sure your dog doesn't learn some of those undesirable habits that once you know the outcome of them, you can't unlearn or un-know them. Prevent incidental learning by management because once your dog has learned how to knock over the garbage to have a smorgasbord it will be hard to resist that temptation again! Now that I have your attention, I had better make it worth your while!

You want your dog to pay attention to you? You had better make it worth his while as well.

I often see dogs check in and look at their owners and there is no one looking back. Desirable "good" dog behaviour gone unnoticed. After a while the dog will check in with their owners less and less often and look for opportunities elsewhere instead. No doubt, undesirable "bad" dog opportunities...

Missed opportunities for owners!

No long training sessions or commands needed. Just watch out of the corner of your eye while you are going about your daily activities. When your dog glances at you, quickly catch that wonderful desirable behaviour in the act! Promptly mark it with a "yeah" or a "yes" and then immediately follow it with some type of reinforcement (treat, toy, game, chance to follow you, life reward, etc.) Keep the element of surprise in your reinforcements. Quickly root for the leftover ham, toss the empty water bottle for him to fetch, tickle him and have a wrestle ... all the while giggling happily and being merry.

If a behaviour is reinforced it is more likely to be repeated. If looking at you is worthwhile to your dog he will not go looking for his own adventures.

If you offered me a dollar to put a finger on the tip of my nose, stand on one leg and jump up and down, I would probably do it! ... and if you asked me to do it all while simultaneously singing supercalifragilisticexpialidocious -- I would probably do that too!

Another person may not be so willing. If they refuse to do it are they stubborn?

Would they perhaps do it for $100?
Would they do it in a different environment where they may be more comfortable such as at home in their livingroom?
Would they do it if they were in a different emotional state such as after a few drinks, or together with friends, or in costume on a stage ...?
Or maybe they can't do it no matter the reward if they have physical limitations or pain.

Different individuals have different motivations and can be reinforced by different things....

Dogs have different motivations just like humans. Why are dogs labeled as stubborn and people aren't?

So next time you call your dog stubborn think again...

Brush and Floss Daily!

Well, okay maybe not the flossing part ... but it is a good idea to brush your dog daily to get him used to holding still, being brushed, examined and handled as a part of a daily routine. This is also good practice in the likelihood of your dog needing medical attention, bandaging or other treatments. If your dog is used to being handled then in an emergency situation there is not the added stress of being restrained and possible prolonged recovery.

You can even teach your dog to enjoy wearing a muzzle or a "cone" and if the need arises at some point in his life then there is no added element of stress.

or conditioning to anything for that matter! This is a great video ... watch for the dog's "Yipee response" at each step of the process.

DIG THIS!

I love nothing more than to watch dogs doing doggie things! Uninhibited sheer joy in divine canine activities!

My own dogs love to dig and I encourage them to do so ... in appropriate places mind you. Dogs need outlets to partake in natural instinctual behaviours if we want them to be well balanced companions. They don't all have to dig but they do need to have some type of seeking activity. Other games which provide outlet for natural drives are Tug-a-War, hide and seek, find it and fetch games. (Yes, it's okay to play Tug-a-War with your dog ... check back soon for a post on that!)

Children get sandboxes to play in. Dogs can have designated digging pits! If they have a special spot where they can dig and occasionally find a special treasure (that you secretly buried there), then they will be much more likely to dig in their special spot more often ... rather than under your prized peonies where the picking isn't so good.

I don't want to have to shout "Leave it" in threatening tones everytime my dog discovers an object of desire to eat or roll in ... I prefer my dog to have a "default" leave it behaviour.
Think children running around with hot dogs in their hands ... isn't it a given that the dog should default to leaving them alone and not having to be told?!

Long Term Confinement Area

Setting up a suitable "Long Term Confinement Area" is a way of keeping Wuffie safe from harm, to aid in housetraining, prevent destructive behaviours, and prevent many other behaviours that puppy (or adolescent) might inadvertently learn if left to his/her own devices ... ie: digging, chewing, barking out the window, chasing the cat, counter-surfing, etc.

It is typically set up in an area of the home that Wuffie regularly spends time and is comfortable in. A fold out exercise pen is securely attached to the crate. At one end of the area is the crate and perhaps a second soft resting area, inside are safe chew toys such as a stuffed Kong, a water dish and possibly a different type of substrate (such as newspaper) in case Wuffie needs to relieve himself (but you don't want him to eliminate on the same type of surface that he plays and sleeps in).

This set up is also useful for dogs that are not yet happy to spend time enclosed in their crates and while you are gradually getting them used to spending time in one.

Dear Mom and Dad: (Lucky's letter home at 8 1/2 weeks of age)

Yes, some overly busy days around here!!! All going well though. Lots of fun and sweetness and learning and exploring and silly antics...

Last night was Lucky's first campfire experience. She ran around the yard and forest with my two doggies all evening long(dead squirrel discovery, creek splashing, digging, wrestling, running, kids on trampoline bring her up for a hug, scooters, bikes, passers by on the street, and...) Then Lucky fell fast asleep on a blankie at the fireside!

I took Lucky along on the group dog walk on Thursday because there were only 5 other dogs (and all good ones of course). I brought a little "Snugli" kind of pack for her but I didn't end up carrying her very much. We were on gentle forest trails and she took it all in stride. Interaction with other dogs is perfect so far -- confident and responding appropriately to their subtle communications. She crossed a couple of simple wooden bridges with hardly a second glance at the gaps between the slats. An ATV went past (happily a quiet and slow one) My routine is to call all the dogs to me whenever a bike or such goes past and hand out the extra good treats so the other dogs and Lucky hardly noticed it! Ensure that new stimuli have positive associations and it isn't left up to chance!

Housetraining so far is going the best of any puppy I have ever had!
Crate training so far is going the worst of any puppy I have ever had!
... don't worry I'm not letting her get upset and stressed 'cause that is counterproductive to getting her to actually LIKE the crate in the end. My oldest daughter is done school now so Lucky is rarely alone long. If she is alone she is in an exercise pen so she doesn't associate crate with stress. Guess that long airplane flight didn't get crate training off to a good start for her. Sigh. Night time she is in a crate beside my bed but she is my first puppy that doesn't sleep through the night. She rouses and moans and fusses quite a few times in the night (she is generally a vocal little pup anyhow) my hand hangs over the edge of the bed and she settles easily with that now. (She doesn't have to eliminate in the night though) When I've had enough of restless sleep at about 5 am I haul her out of the crate and put her under the blankies with me until 7am. (I can't believe I did that past the first night!!! But I know that you are okay with that so.....!!! I have to take time out to play some games in and out of the crate (Such as "Crate Games" by Susan Garrett)

Back to housetraining. Many puppies have times when they are active and playing where they pee as often as every 20 minutes. Lucky has a bladder of steel. She easily goes 1 hr between and can make it all the way down the stairs and outside without having a quick stop along the way. She also learned how to use the doggie door ALL BY HERSELF! She does her biz in gravel or grass. Only two "accidents" so far (one of each kind) but at 8 weeks of age it isn't about the puppy having control it is about the owner taking the puppy out. We have a blank chart on the fridge door to record input and output to help keep track. (I will try to copy it and put it on my website)

Nipping and biting is part of puppyhood. They are learning about their world and learning about bite inhibition. Lucky's little shark teeth are testing the world allright! She learns how hard to bite when wrestling with other dogs -- if she clamps down too hard they tell her in doggie ways by yelping, stopping play, and perhaps giving her a short reprimand back. Human skin is even more delicate than dog fur so we also have to teach them not to bite hard when playing with us. Yelp sharply and stop play abruptly by standing up or walking away. Give them another try or substitute your hand with a toy. With repetition puppy will learn to inhibit biting. Lucky is progressing as can be expected. Many more weeks of repetition....

Obedience commands. Ugh ... I hate those words. They are signals or cues that we want them to learn as life skills. Dogs aren't meant to obey ... we must earn their willing compliance ... this isn't the time to go on and on about my views on training ;0) Puppy pushups is a fun little exercise (Sit, Down, Stand). Sit is fast becoming a default behaviour for Lucky! I love default behaviours! Whenever she wants attention she sits and looks at us! I never miss a chance to reinforce that behaviour, with a pat or a treat or playtime! She sits for her food dish and I almost see a hesitation waiting for the release word "okay"... Coming when called is so easy to teach a puppy! Lucky is no exception. Recall or come cues are all too easy to ruin though, so I am ensuring that something extra good or extra fun always follows ... and if not I would actually get her or not use the sacred recall word. Jumping up is fast extinguishing ... that's when people walk away and fun ends. Waiting at doorways is something that I feel is important to teach so we are playing around with that too. Smart puppy learning how to get the good things in life!

I worked at the vets on Thursday and brought in her stool sample in for testing. Negative for worms or eggs! Yay! Check with your vet again when you get back as apparently you want to have three successive negatives. I will bring her by the vets office again next week just to make sure vet visits are always happily anticipated! Mmmmm.... liver and friendly people!

She is eating and pooing normally. I have done some preliminary resource guarding prevention exercises by coming up to her food dish when she is eating and given her some extra yummy things so that people near her food dish are good news! These exercises should also be carried out with toys and bones. Speaking of which ... I have given her a couple of raw knuckle and marrow bones. Yum! At first she didn't know what to do with them and whined at it ... she soon figured it out though! She has eaten and drank out of a couple of different dishes in a couple of different locations. The water dish that she liked to dig in got replaced and put outside! Maybe I should buy a kiddie pool today for recreation time...

To teach her to accept handling I am in the habit of occasionally restraining her gently and holding a paw and fiddling with the toenails. Her ears are clean but I check them and pretend to clean them too. If she struggles slightly I maintain my hold and then when she is calm I set her down again and we have a little play time. I still have to do mouth and teeth handling...

Yesterday I took all three doggies to Sonja's school because they had a fun day. All the children crowding around her was like a fun party for Lucky! Then the three dogs got to zoom around the huge grassy field! Yay! To get to the school we had to walk over a concrete overpass that crossed the highway. On the way over, the children carried Lucky and on the way back over she confidently trotted back across. Then back in the van she fell fast asleep!

Riding in the van is a pleasurable experience for Lucky. She is calm and content. When she gets sleepy I put her in a small crate I have beside my drivers seat and there is no fussing there.

What else was on that checklist to expose her to in the crucial first 12 weeks of her life? Oh yeah ... household appliances, vacuum cleaner, different floor surfaces, people with glasses or hats or beards, cats, other peoples houses, check, check and double check. Have to go and visit with my friends horses today to put a checkmark on the livestock column...

And pictures .... yikes, I've been so busy having fun that I haven't taken enough pictures! Must remember to pack camera along with all the puppy gear!

Oh oh ... Lucky is awake from her nap! Gotta go! More adventures this weekend!

First Steps Puppy Class - Session #3

The dogs and owners in this session are some of the best "partners" we have had! Usually the focus of a First Steps Puppy Class with puppies 8 - 16 weeks is to have an opportunity to have dog/dog social interaction and learn appropriate play, an opportunity to develop bite inhibition and to get a good start on socialization and handling with other people and in the class environment. The dogs in this group are off to a great start on all these things so we are working on foundation training behaviours such as attention or eye contact, response to name, zen (graduated levels of leave-it training) and impulse control exercises such as check-in and on-off switch and to release your dog before he makes his own decision when he is done being with you. We also started on puppy push-ups (sit, down, stand) and recall (come).

We've talked about the importance and the outcomes of every experience that a dog has, socialization, how dogs learn, and different ways a behaviour can be reinforced (treat, toy, praise, life rewards) and how to graduate to intermittent reinforcement. We've observed dog body language and the impacts our body language has on them, interrupted dog play with collar grabs with our own and with others' puppies.

I am impressed how many of the owners are understanding the benefits of management to prevent behaviour problems (crates, baby gates, tie-downs, etc.) Owners are also understanding that they must be an advocate for their dog and decide what situations their dogs should be prevented from being in in order to not learn undesirable behaviours inadvertently. A shy dog is not going to benefit from well meaning people coming up to it (and learning to bite to keep people away) any more than a jumpy dog is going to learn not to jump on people if he keeps getting attention for full body contact. If a dog lunges and pulls towards another dog they have just been rewarded for unruly behaviour and not paying any attention to you ... our puppies are learning that if there is something they want that they show some self control and check in with their owners first and then either something better happens or they may get a chance to be released (OK go play) and play with that dog after all -- but on the owners terms. Premack Principle!

Everyone seemed to understand that if a dog is worried or overstimulated that he is not in the optimal state for learning (reactive, hind brain). Cash in your chips and remove yourself and your doggie from the situation. Just get outta Dodge. Move away and increase your distance from the distraction (fearful object or exciting stimulus) until your dog is at a point that he can focus. Putting your body inbetween your dog and the stimulus (body blocking) can also help diffuse the situation. Having some favourite and heavily reinforced behaviours (tricks such as shake-a-paw or eye contact with you) can sometimes be used to get the dog to re-connect with you.

Shaping ... there were a few times when we couldn't get the full desired behaviour from a dog. (laying all the way down, turning full attention to mom) Because we were still in the process of learning we rewarded a close approximation of the response rather than having a dog give up and stop engaging in the training game with us altogether. It would also be a good idea to do a bit more training in a less stimulating environment to solidify the foundation as well.

We have a shy little Chihuahua in this group but his Mommy is doing a great job and the little guy is adjusting more every week. We want to have as many tools in our toolbox for training as possible so if you don't control your dogs' meals it is one less tool that you have control of. Cat chasing questions came up a couple of times and I didn't give a very good response at the time. There are so many factors involved! Instinct and hardwired behaviours are very hard to stop once the dog has learned them. Once you know, you can't un-know! Dogs are most motivated by reinforcement -- meaning that if there is a chance of something good happening they are going to try every chance they can get if there is any possibility of a good outcome (reiforcement, chase, etc.) We could possibly inhibit their behaviour or distract them but just like gambling addicts, if there is even a slight possibility of winning the jackpot (lottery, chance to chase a cat, etc.) then that is the best motivation. So sadly, prevention is the best plan and teaching that alternatives are just as good ... or a long but possible re-training process. Hmmm..... Thanks to all the handlers and puppies for coming to our sessions. Your puppies have a lifetime of learning -- not to scare you -- but it is largely up to you what they actually learn ... and yes, old dogs can learn new tricks so you are in for many years of training too :0) Training should be all about fun and keeping your dog interacting with you so it is all good.

And don't worry ... my dogs have some behaviours I wish they hadn't learned either ;0)

Great Crates!

Why teach your dog to be comfortable in a crate?
... this could be the start of a really loooooong list ...

The first thing that comes to mind is Puppy training. Housetraining is so much easier with a crate. For that matter even adult dogs that need housetraining learn faster if using a crate. Puppy chewing is easily prevented if you can use a crate for unsupervised times. Even older dogs sometimes have lapses in chewing under times of stress or moving. Good to have an option to fall back on. Preventing separation anxiety is oh so much easier than treating it! Teach your dog to be calm and comfortable in a crate.

If your dog is worried about guests or workers around the home they may enjoy some time in their safe, cozy spot!
Your dog doesn't learn to bark out the front window.
He can't learn to dig or jump fences and escape while you are away from home.
If you feed you dog bones and don't want icky-goo all over the floors ... feed them in the crate and then wipe out the tray.

Introduce your puppy or a dog to a crate and keep them used to using one occasionally as a "lifetime" tool. If your dog is injured one day and needs bed-rest as part of treatment then you don't have to add another stress to your dog... they are already familiar with crate-rest. Trips to the veterinarian, groomer or boarding facility will be less stressful as well. Who knows, maybe one day you will want to compete in one of the many exciting dog shows or sports and then having a dog that relaxes in his crate will help win ribbons :0)

Besides ... how about those times you can't leave your dog in a hot vehicle (or a cold truck) but could bring the dog indoors with you if he was in a crate. Or if you have to visit the in-laws but they don't want your dog underfoot ... you could set up a crate in their living room and your dog and you could still come! Nevermind, bad example ... sorry ... I can't come visit ... my dog isn't crate trained.

Nip it in the bud!

I don't know about the origins of that expression but I DO know the origins of dog behaviours! Whether is it desirable behaviour (good dog) or undesirable behaviour in our eyes (bad dog or problem dog) the behaviour happens because it was reinforced in SOME way. Reinforcement comes in many forms!

Little Lucky puppy for some reason has started barking as she excitedly runs down the stairs. I know that if something happens once or twice it is likely to happen again! The barking may not be entirely conscious but it is part of the excitement and can quickly become a learned behaviour. I will ensure that for the next little while that stair descents are not so exciting and stimulating and then reinforce the new behaviour using praise and edibles and... I will reinforce for calm descents!

As a separate training game I will play "turn on and off switch" or "Silly Sit" with her. I will start teaching her to "target" as well. My own dogs go to "spot" at the foot of the stairs. The more "foundation behaviours" that a dog knows the easier it is to teach new behaviours or problem solve!

Puppy's First 48 Hours!

Lucky arrived 48 hours ago. It's been very very busy! I was going to write about the first 24 hours but now 48 hours have gone by!

Oh so cute! Soft and warm and cuddly! Sharp teeth, puppy breath and hilarious antics! Lucky is an outgoing girl and is learning about the world around her!

Her temperament appears nicely balanced. Lucky has taken the new surroundings of our home in stride. She has met many new things including a few dogs, two cats, toddlers, preschoolers, children, men and women, bicycles, wagons, and has started skateboard training....

Lucky has gone for two short car rides, explored forested trails near the river, stumbled over rocks and splashed her paws in water. Opal and Trixie taught her how to dig already too! She can now not only race up but also down the stairs. Neither noisy household appliances, trucks outside or bouncing children on the trampoline seem to fizz her. Tonight the neigbours two boys ran down the driveway at us with their hockey gear on. Wiggly happy puppy wanted to play with them. Now let me see what else is on that checklist of things to expose a puppy to before it is 12 weeks of age and the "critcal socialization period" comes to an end...?!

Lucky is jumping up on us less already. She can often be found sitting and looking at us as if saying "please".... that's what gets attention from us xo!

Nipping and Biting will of course continue over the next few weeks. We do want to help her learn bite inhibition. Our human skin is delicate ... "Yelp! Then try again and be a bit more gentle or bite this toy instead." Repeat, repeat, repeat.

Chew this and not that. Supervision and management. Furniture and carpets discouraged and Kong Toys and chew sticks encouraged. Repeat repeat repeat.

Housetraining has been great so far ... only one pee in the house. Everything else has made it outside on the grass or gravel. Realistic expectations. Praise and reinforcement! Good habits starting! Sure, she's a "good" puppy but I take the credit for this one :0)

Crate training has had some successes and some challenges.
The first night was unsettling even with her in a crate right beside my bed. My arm hanging over the edge of my bed and hand inside the crate. She still fussed every hour or so. Yes, I admit ... by the time 5am came around I was not ready to wake up so she came into bed with me. (I can always erase this post right?) Two hours of sleep! The second night Lucky was only up once for a pee break and then right back to sleep. Maybe it was that long play session in the yard that evening... Or the warm beanbag. Yay!
Daytime is the next crate challenge. Lucky is only content in the crate if she is very tired.... when she falls asleep on a cushion or in my arms I move her to the crate. If she rouses then usually a gentle stroking will settle her again. When she starts to wake I let her out before she gets restless. We are already working on impulse control and not pushing past the crate door ... more on that later! When I had to leave her alone for a couple of hours I left her in an "error-less environment" -- a gated off puppy proofed area with an open crate inside, chew toys, water and a different surface (newspaper, pads) in the corner. I will admit that she made unhappy vocalizations but by the time I came back she was sleeping in the open crate. In the meantime I am trying to feed her in the crate, play games in and out of the crate, and making crate times good times.

New Puppy Arrives!!!

Oh my goodness ... what was I thinking?!? Funny how cute fuzzy faces tempt us to do crazy things!
We are looking after a baby Wirehaired Hungarian Vizsla for just over 2 weeks. "Lucky" is actually a half-sister to Opal so how could I refuse!? Lucky flew from Michigan on the East coast and arrived in Seattle on Friday. Luckily she had a littermate to keep her company on the journey. Her wonderful new owners had two days with her before driving up from Vancouver and bringing her to us yesterday. It was very hard for them to leave their new puppy of course but they had a prearranged trip overseas and didn't want to wait until the next litter of little WHV puppies.
So ... that is how we came to look after this new little fuzz baby...

I plan to write an entry most days and take some pictures and videos.
Hopefully following this blog will help other new puppy owners.
Topics will include: socialization, housetraining, crate training, nippping and biting, early training, etc...

Crepuscular (Adjective): used to describe some animals that are primarily active during twilight, that is at dawn and dusk. Crepuscular animals may also be active on a bright moonlit night.

Knowing this will help you to anticipate your dogs' needs ... and so that you aren't surprised by his "misbehaviours".

When my dog Opal was a puppy she was no exception! One of my favourite activities to keep her occupied during busy evenings was giving her a box to tear apart and digging in the bottom of it because it had biscuit crumbs hidden under the flaps. What fun that was to watch!

A long off leash walk, romping, sniffing, running and swimming is one of the best things that you can do to fulfill your dogs physical needs ... but never underestimate how exhausting some mental stimulation and brain work exercises can be!

TOYS FOR DOGS!!!

There is such a confusing array of toys available for purchase today. Only a select few are worthwhile and safe for you to purchase. Each individual dog’s chewing style and play preferences must also be considered. What one dog shreds in minutes can last another a lifetime. There is no one type of indestructible toy for all dogs. Homemade or makeshift toys can be used if proper precautions are taken. Size of toy must be large enough so there is no risk of getting lodged in your dog’s throat. When pieces start breaking off of toys they must be discarded. The material that toys are made of must obviously be non-toxic. Sturdy soft toys are available but even those should be watched as they are not to be digested.

There are three main types of toys. Alone busy toys that the dog can have safely when unsupervised, toys that need supervision to ensure they remain safe and toys that are reserved for special interactive play-training with the owner. Rotating your dogs’ toys weekly can help keep their interest.

The selection of “treats” on store shelves is overwhelming. Many of these treats are not of good quality and made with questionable ingredients. Look for ones that are made mostly of animal protein. Of course use good judgement when using some of the junk food type treats. Know if your dog has any food sensitivities. Sometimes anything different can be rewarding to your dog.

LOW Level Rewards

Your dogs’ regular dry kibble food can be used for a reward in many low distraction situations.
Daily kibble can be turned into a more powerful motivator by measuring out your dog’s daily allotment of dry dog food and putting it into a container or zip type bag and then tossing it with a few morsels of strong smelling treats such as cheese, roast beef, chicken, etc.

MID Level Rewards

Cat Food Crunchies
Packaged store bought treats
Breakfast cereal such as Cheerios
Cut up vegetables such as carrots, lettuce...
Cut up fruit such as apples, bananas, blueberries, pears ... especially watermelon on a hot summer day :0)
Snack foods such as popcorn, crackers, corn chips, etc.
Cooked pasta, tortellini
Roll type soft dog food cut up into small cubes (Rollover, Natural Balance)

HIGH Level Rewards

Roasted chicken, roast beef
Boiled or baked organ meats such as chicken hearts, livers, beef tongue or heart

The way that you present your dog with his treat can change how rewarding it is as well. Try tossing it into the air. Try rolling it ahead of your dog on the ground. Try wiggling it around erratically before giving it. Try hiding or burying it slightly.

Jackpots! If your dog made a particularly good effort then reward him with multiple treats given in succession and spread out over a longer period of time while chanting “oooo ... yeah ... wow ... what a good dog you are .... good good good good dog!”

Play is crucial to the health and well being of your dog! Dogs are social animals and benefit from interaction with their own species. They also benefit from interaction with us. If we play appropriate games with our dogs it strengthens our relationship with each other. If we have a better relationship with each other then we communicate better with each other. Communicating and play is an important element of training and a fun one too!

First Steps Puppy Class

First night of a new set of Puppy's First Steps Class at Eagleview Veterinary Hospital this evening. The first night can always be a bit of mayhem... not knowing what the puppies personalities are and how they will interact with each other and with their owners. This group was a pleasant surprise! From the Great Dane to the Chihuahua and the four others in between there were no extremes in temperament. The owners and the two children were all great too. Puppy mouthing, nipping and chewing were the most prevalent concerns for all.
